It is a pleasure to inform you that this Polar Bear image has been Highly Commended in the Moments in Nature category in Glanzlichter 2024 (Germany). In 2024, the contest attracted a total of 20,000 images.
Over the past few decades, the Arctic sea ice has been melting rapidly. According to the latest climate models, the Arctic could be virtually ice-free during summer as soon as 2030. This image was captured in Svalbard at 80.6 degrees in September 2023 and provides a glimpse of what the entire summer could look like in just ten years.
